Pick Up The Phone
Main Scripture: John 3:16
Last night I had one of the most interesting and spiritually rewarding phone calls that I have had in a long time. In High School I worked at a grocery store in my home town. Many of my co-workers went to school with me and we all had a great time working together. While I was still working there I had a co-worker who was a few years younger than me who I also went to school with. We knew each other yet we were not super close. I trained him when we first started and we had a few conversations but not many and we weren’t serious friends.
It’s been about 2 and a half years since I have worked at that grocery store. I haven’t heard from this friend of mine since the day’s of the grocery store. Then last night while I was driving my phone rang from a number I didn’t recognize. At first, I didn’t want to pick it up. I was tired yesterday and wasn’t in the “mood”. Ever been there before? Where we use our excuse of a bad “mood” to not do something? This was me. Then after the phone rang I felt conviction from God that I didn’t answer the phone. Because I was letting my own self get in the way of something as simple as answering a phone call from an unknown number.
I then Called the number back with a voice asking me if I was Brady. I simply replied “yes, this is me”. The voice on the other end of the line said I have some questions about God. I remember you from when we used to work together. I need you to tell me about God. Then God worked in an amazing way. During the 13 minute phone call last night this person accepted Jesus Christ as His Lord and savior. By the end of the call he said he really wanted to know God. He had the desire to invite him into his heart. Last night my friend from long ago was saved. He is now a Child of God. He is my brother in Christ. Last night had absolutely nothing to do with me, it was a true work of God in this person’s life. I could feel and see the Holy Spirit moving and working in and all around this situation. I just had to pickup the phone and do what God wanted me to do. Pick up the phone. Let God handle the rest.
One thing that struck me in my conversation with this person last night was how in awe he was of the well known scripture John 3:16.
“For God so loved the World that He gave His one and only Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”-John 3:16
He couldn’t believe that God wanted to save him. That whosever can come to Jesus. John 3:16 is a very well known scripture, yet it holds so much truth for those who know the Lord as well as for those who don’t. I want to encourage you today when God gives you an opportunity to spread the Gospel walk through that door. Whether it’s answering the phone like I struggled with in the beginning last night, or maybe it’s holding the door for someone or simply texting someone letting them know you are praying for them and here for them. Not sure what your “phone” may be today. But I do encourage you to pick it up. You never know how God is going to use you today and what he has in store, but we do know that he holds it all in store.
